  1. At first glace I thought this to be a rather strange comic but when I read it I laughed not only at the charachters but also at their names. I think this is a humorous comic and the group did well to keep the barbie theme incorporated in the comic. The comic itself uses elements of Propp and Todorov in that there are character functions, these include the princess; Mayple Syrup, the hero; Jock Joe, and the villian; Jagermeister. There is also a plot to the story in the beginning there is a state of equilibrium then a sudden distraction causing a disequilibrium, because we assume that Joe Jock and Mayple's relationship will be a smooth one because they are so in love yet the entrance of Jagermeister to the scene takes that assumption totally of course.

The use of dolls may seem strange but as I said those are good props to use as they are what the theme of the blog is about. I also think that it was well done and effective because when Joe Jock found Jagermeister he kicked him down and in the comic we see Jagermeister literally break to pieces (because he is a bottle).
I was happy when Mayple and Joe Jock reunited because this signifies an equilibrium being reached after disruption, because of Joe Jock, the hero saving Mayple from the evil Jagermeister who wanted to have his way with her.
What I also liked is that there is a message at the end of using protection during sex.

The only criticism I do have is what the was the part about meatballs about?what do meatballs have to do with anything? It was totally random and confused me a bit. Another critism is why does Mayple suddenly get undressed? Could there not have been an event that led up to her being undressed.
Overall I think this is a well done comic that incorporates Propp and Todorov and made for easy humorous reading. The typical happily ever after romantic genre.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Andz.
Maple Syrup is a vegan hippy, so when she is hanging out with Jagermeister and she starts to eat meatballs and wear leather, it signifys that alcohol can change who you are because your inhibitions have dissapeared.
And she is not "suddenly undressed" as it clearly says in the narration that she was having so much fun she did not realise that Jagermeister had started taking her clothes off of her.

  3. Hi Guys
I really enjoyed reading your comic “The Adventures of Jock Joe”. I was impressed as to how you managed to use and shoot action figures in your comic strip without a hitch! I was however slightly confused as to whether your comic dealt with rape (anyone under the influence of alcohol has no contractual capacity), teenage pregnancy or whether its point was to advocate the use of condoms as each idea was explored in just one frame. The fact that your story adhered to a number of Proppian character functions, all of which developed logically from the previous function, made it easier to follow and more enjoyable. Your choice of villain, an alcoholic beverage, was ingenious as most students around the world have at least once “fallen into its evil clutches”.

  4. The Adventures of Jock Joe is a brilliant comic strip. The storyline is very clever and incorporates Todorov’s narrative theory very well. The first equilibrium is established when Jock Joe meets Maple Syrup and they go on a date, the disruption occurs in the form of the metaphorical personification of the character Jagermeister who takes advantage of Maple Syrup. The second equilibrium is established when Jock Joe ‘saves’ Maple Syrup from her error in judgment and offers her some sound advice. The Proppian characters are also clearly identified. Jock Joe is the hero of the narrative who seeks out to save the princess, Maple Syrup. Jagermeister is the villain character who causes the stories disruption, but is ultimately symbolically and physically defeated by Jock Joe. In true narrative expectation, the hero and princess marry and the last slide depicts their ‘happily ever after’. I hope to see more adventures of Jock Joe.
